PWD: Public Works Department

PWD is the acronym for Public Works Department. It is an official Govt. of India department that is responsible for the construction as well as maintenance for public infrastructures such as roads, government buildings bridges, water systems, bridges and many more. PWD is the central agency which is accountable for all kinds of public sector work in India. In order to provide drinking water that is safe for the city and to repair damaged water pipes is the responsibility of PWD. In addition in the event of damages to government schools roads, hospitals, or other facilities and bridges, repairs are made by the PWD.

PWD is found across all states of India. It is divided into divisions, sub-divisions and sections. In every state, it performs nearly the same tasks and responsibilities as designing and building the public works undertaken by the Government, including creating and developing roads, security, and infrastructure on highways and roads as well as maintenance and reorganization of government buildings and other government buildings, etc. This kind of work was was previously performed by the military in India. In the mid-19th century when the responsibility for public works was transferred to a separate segment of the Indian Civil Service.
