On the advice of her mother, Hazel Grace Lancaster 17 years old is reluctantly attending an organization that provides support to cancer patients. To be able to breathe she relies on an oxygen pump that is portable due to her cancer. She meets a boy at one of her gatherings and discovers his name is Augustus Waters. He's there to help Isaac who is a mutual friend. Isaac was diagnosed with an canceroustumor within his left eye. This was removed successfully. He now has to have the opposite eye taken out. Augustus arrives at Hazel following the meeting and informs her that there is a tumor in one eye. He then invites Hazel to visit his home and go to the cinema. They also talk about the experienceswith the disease. Hazel finds out that she has thyroid cancer, and that it has been able to spread to her lung. Augustus has been diagnosed as having osteosarcoma, and is now cancer-free. Augustus and Hazel are in agreement to read their favourite books before taking Hazel home. Augustus offers Hazel the price of dawn and Hazel suggests an Imperial Fliction.
Hazel writes about the beauty of An Inexplicable Affliction. It's a story about Anna who is a young girl who has cancer. It's the only novel she's ever read that reflects her experiences. She explains how the novel abruptly closes at the end of the sentence and leaves readers with no closureas as to the fate of the characters. She speculates about Peter Van Houten's mysterious author of the novel, who she believes left Amsterdam soon after the publication. The author hasn't been seen since then.
Augustus unexpectedly informs Hazel that he stumbled across the assistant of Van Houten Lidewij and was successful in establishing an email exchange with her. Hazel is able to share the letter of Van Houten with the other, and they come up with an agenda to inquire about Van Houten questions. This is an attempt to understand the mystery's confusing conclusion. Hazel is the most worried over Anna's future. She is convinced that Anna's mother will be able to survive the loss of her daughter and that her parents will be fine after Hazel's passing. Van Houten eventually replies that he's only able to respond to Hazel's inquiries in person. He invites her to visit him whenever she's visiting Amsterdam.
Augustus is invited by Hazel for a lunch soon after. He turns out that he has planned a picnic with a Dutch theme. He informs him that Van Houten is a charity which grants wishes to children suffering from cancer and has offered to give him his wish. He rubs her face and she is thrilled. She is able to see that she loves him, but she's sure she will harm him if she dies. She compares herself to a bomb.
Hazel experiences an extreme episodeof the fluid accumulation in her lungs and is admitted into the ICU. After a couple of days, Hazel is released, and is able to discover that Augustus is not leaving the waiting room of the hospital. Hazel receives another note from van Houten. The letter is more intimate and mysterious. Hazel is now more determined to go to Amsterdam than she has ever been after having read the letter. However, there's a issue: her parents and team of doctors don't believe she's strong enough to travel. It seems impossible up until the doctor. Maria, one of her most experienced doctors, persuades Hazel that she has to travel in order the freedom to live her life.
Augustus, Hazel and Hazel's mother are planning to go to Amsterdam. However, the moment Hazel as well as Augustus initially meet with Van Houten, they realize that he's not a renowned genius, but an angry drunk who is unable to answer the questions of Hazel. They leave Van Houten's place in total dismay and are joined by Lidewij, who is shocked at the behavior of Van Houten. Hazel realises she still is in love with him. Augustus's condition deteriorates quickly. Augustus arranges a funeral as well. Isaac and Hazel provide funeral eulogies. Hazel draws inspiration from Van Huyten on bigger and smaller infinity. She informs Augustus that she is incredibly happy for her and how she would never give up their time together.
Augustus dies eight days later. Hazel is shocked to meet Van Houten attending her funeral. Van Houten said the fact that Gus and he kept in touch, and that Augustus demanded that Van Houten rectify the mistake he made on his journey in Amsterdam. Van Houten further stated the Hazel must attend the funeral of his father. Van Houten discusses Anna's fate abstractly, however Hazel does not care. Hazel is told by Isaac just a few days after that Augustus had written a letter to her. While Hazel is trying to locate the manuscript and finds Van Houten, he appears. He tells Hazel drunk that Anna was the name of his daughter. When she was just eight years old, she passed away from cancer. A Imperial Abilities was his literary attempt to come to terms with her death. Van Houten is advised by Hazel to drink and begin writing a new book.
Hazel discovers later she was Augustus had delivered the pages directly to Van Houten, as he had asked Van Houten to write a thoughtful tribute to Hazel. Lidewij forces Van Houten to read the pages and then he sends them to Hazel. Hazel completes the novel by reading the words of Augustus. He stated that although it's normal to be injured in the world, we also have the choice of choosing to let others take the same actions. He was pleased with his choice. He hopes that Hazel will be pleased with her choice. Hazel states that she is happy with the conclusion of the novel.
